Open Eye Straight Shank Hook
The Gamakatsu Siwash Open Eye Hook is a straight shank hook designed to be an alternative to the treble hooks used on many lures. Some anglers prefer the single hooks to treble hooks on some lures because they offer ease of catch and release and require only a single hook point to penetrate the fish's jaw. Treble hooks are ideal for some techniques when targeting specific species of fish, however, some fishermen have found that treble hooks provide the fish more leverage when trying to get unhooked and they are also difficult to penetrate the jaw with all three hook points. To summarize, this is really an angler preference without a definitive answer. In addition to use as a replacement hook, the Siwash Open Eye hook can be used as a trailer hook for spinnerbaits and buzzbaits. To add the Siwash as a trailer hook first close the eye by pinching the eye closed with a pair of pliers. Then add a small piece of shrink tubing over the eye and thread it onto the main hook. This will serve as additional insurance for the commonly occurring short strikes on the moving lures.
